Lenten Small Groups
Weekly during Lent 2012
Small groups of young adults gather on a weekly basis throughout Lent to discuss the upcoming Sunday Mass readings. Gatherings will be arranged on various nights and at various parishes depending on the number, availability, and location of the young adults who sign up. If you are interested in participating, sign up by February 15th either at a Theology on Tap session or by emailing which weekday evenings and weekend times would work for your schedule. (A “family version” of the resource can be found on the Diocese of Victoria website.)

World Youth Day Pilgrimage
August 10-22, 2011
Lourdes, France & Madrid, Spain
Bishop Rhoades led our group of 120 young adults and teens on the diocesan World Youth Day Pilgrimage. The itinerary included a retreat in Lourdes, France and stops in Loyola and Burgos, Spain prior to WYD events with Pope Benedict XVI in Madrid.

Theme: “Prayer: Hearing the Whisper of God in Daily Life”
Why should we pray? Why don’t we pray? What are the obstacles within ourselves and within our culture that make it difficult for us to kneel in prayer and adoration before God? And most important — how do we pray?
Bishop John D’Arcy was born on August 18, 1932, the son of Irish immigrants. He began preparation for the priesthood in September, 1949 at Saint John’s Seminary in Brighton, Massachusetts. He studied in Rome at the Angelicum from 1965 to 1968 and received his doctorate in spiritual theology in 1968. D’Arcy then served as spiritual director and professor of spiritual theology at Saint John’s Seminary from 1968 to 1985. Originally ordained as Auxiliary Bishop for Boston in 1975, Bishop D’Arcy eventually served as the bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend from 1985 to 2010.

6-Church Passion Walk & Palm Sunday Mass

The journey begins at 12pm at St. Joseph Church, processing to St. Patrick, St. Hedwig, St. Augustine and St. Stanislaus, ending with the celebration of Mass at Holy Cross Church at 4pm. An Opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation for Young Adults

Phil will share insights from the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola that are as practical and relevant for our lives as they were in Ignatius’ own day. Make the choice to come join us!
Fr. Phil Hurley, SJ serves as the Young Adult Director for the Jesuit’s Apostleship of Prayer national office in Milwaukee. He is no stranger to the field of ministry with young adults, having worked over the years on retreats, conferences, social justice service programs, and several World Youth Day Pilgrimages. Fr. Phil is director of the travelling “Hearts on Fire” retreat program that helps young adults connect their faith and everyday life. A “Hearts on Fire” retreat will be held in our local area on April 8-9, 2011. (see the retreat description further below)

Theme: Walking the Spiritual Journey
Presenter: Fr. David Mary Engo, FFM
Fr. David is the Superior of the Franciscan Brothers Minor, a religious order that moved into our diocese with Bishop Rhoades. These Franciscans take their vow of poverty very seriously – walking everywhere possible, going barefoot unless the situation requires sandals or boots, owning nothing, relying solely on food donations for meals, and simply wearing their brown habits year round. Fr. David worked for 3 years with young adults at St. John the Evangelist Parish in Philadelphia, where he was Co-Director of the Catholic Underground ministry, formed houses of discernment, and led retreats, Bible studies, a pro-life group, and outreach to the poor/homeless.

Swing a hammer or help with other tasks as young adults from area parishes participate in a Habitat for Humanity build. Our group will be doing the “pre-build” for the Women’s Build house, which from that time onward will be worked on only by groups of women. We’ll construct basement walls and construct the main floor of the house. No tools or experience necessary!

Chrism Mass
Monday, March 29, 2010, 7:30pm
St. Matthew Cathedral, South Bend
Bishop Kevin Rhoades invites the diocese to attend this Mass during which he will consecrate the Sacred Chrism, bless the Oil of Catechumens and Oil of the Sick/Infirm, and distribute them to all of the local parishes of the diocese for use over the following year.
We need help with hospitality for this event and are looking for 6-8 young adults to serve as greeters and ushers. Volunteers would need to arrive by 6:30pm. If you are able to help, please let us know right away!

Marriage & Communication Seminar

Join us for a fun, humorous, and thought-provoking evening as we discuss how to enrich communication with your spouse, speak each other’s love languages, and actively resolve conflict in order to increase the level of intimacy and oneness experienced in your marriage.
This lively, two-part seminar is hosted by young adults of St. John the Evangelist in Goshen and is open to all couples who have experienced the sacrament of marriage. It will be held on Sundays, February 28th and March 7th from 4:30 to 7 PM in St. John’s church basement. Refreshments will be served, and babysitting is available.
World Youth Day – Info Session

The pilgrimage includes a private retreat in Lourdes, France and other stops prior to WYD events and Mass with Pope Benedict XVI in Madrid, Spain. Vesper Service with Bishop Rhoades

Our new bishop, Bishop Kevin Rhoades, will pray Vespers (evening prayer) with the local community at the co-cathedral in South Bend. He will be officially installed as our bishop the following day at the co-cathedral in Fort Wayne. Come pray together and meet Bishop Rhoades at the reception immediately afterward. Arrive early to get a seat and look for Sean and Maria to sit as a group.
Theology of the Body Series for Young Adults

When it comes to relationships, the secular world tells us that men are from Mars and women are from Venus. What does our Catholic faith say? Discover the teaching of Pope John Paul II’s “theology of the body” and the compelling truth behind the Church’s teachings on marriage and the family, chastity, contraception, homosexuality, celibacy, and the purpose of human life. This 5-week series is for all local young adults, married and single.
Dr. Mary Healy’s book, Men and Women are from Eden, will guide our discussions. Books can be purchased for $10 at the sessions.
