Re: The Use of Low Gluten Hosts and Mustum by the Laity as Well as Clergy
Date: April, 2004
In a recent clarification from the Holy See concerning the use of low gluten hosts and mustum by laity and/or clergy, permission can now be given by the bishop of the diocese for priest and deacons in his diocese to use mustum and low gluten hosts. The local bishop can also delegate pastors to give permission to the laity of their parishes to use low gluten hosts or mustum for the celebration of Mass. Bishop D'Arcy so delegates the pastors of our diocese.
Please find enclosed the newsletter of November 2003 of the Committee on the Liturgy which explains this topic thoroughly. If you do receive requests from time to time from members of your parish, you will then be able to help them with this.
Obviously people can either receive Communion under one species or another, but those who have a problem with both fermented wine and the gluten in hosts would be especially helped by this special permission and accommodation. We want to be pastorally sensitive to people's health needs, if possible. I would urge your compassion and understanding in helping people be able to receive Christ in Holy Communion.
